Biography

Andrea Zittel (b. 1965) is a leading American contemporary artist known for her immersive explorations of living systems, social norms, and self-sufficiency. Working across sculpture, installation, textiles, design, and drawing, she blurs the boundary between art and life, creating prototypes for how we live. Her iconic works include mobile living units and isolation experiments, reflecting on freedom, control, and meaning.

Zittel has exhibited at major institutions including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, New Museum, Carnegie Museum of Art, and Magasin 3, Stockholm. She founded A–Z West in Joshua Tree, a site and studio for her ongoing practice merging Modernist aesthetics with experimental living.

Her commissions include projects for the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Denver Federal Center, and Central Park. Zittel continues to impact the contemporary art market with thought-provoking installations that challenge conventions of design, autonomy, and domestic space.
