Biography

Hilary Pecis is an American painter known for her contemporary figurative paintings with vibrant colors and dynamic compositions, exploring themes of domestic interiors, cityscapes , and still lifes . Born in 1979 in California, she lives and works in Los Angeles. Her work is part of the revival of contemporary American figuration, blending references to art history, popular visual culture, and the modernist tradition of color.

Hilary Pecis graduated from the California College of the Arts (BFA) and received an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). Her academic training informs a rigorous practice of oil painting, characterized by flat areas of saturated color, bold perspectives, and a stylization of forms inspired by Post-Impressionism and Fauvism . Her work evokes the legacy of painters like Henri Matisse in its decorative and expressive approach to color.

She has presented numerous major solo exhibitions, including “Come Along With Me" at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid (2022), “Mirrors" at the Timothy Taylor Gallery, London (2021), and several exhibitions at Rachel Uffner Gallery in New York. Her work has also been shown in institutional group exhibitions and is included in important public collections. In 2019, she received the California Community Foundation Fellowship for Visual Artists.

Represented by Timothy Taylor (London and New York), Hilary Pecis has established herself as a key figure in contemporary painting, renewing the codes of landscape, still life and interior scene through a vibrant, immersive approach deeply rooted in the observation of everyday life.
