Pierre Clerk

Pierre Clerk, born on April 26, 1928 in Atlanta (Georgia, United States) of Canadian parents, is a contemporary artist, painter, sculptor, and printmaker whose work constitutes a major reference in American geometric abstraction. Installed successively in Canada, New York, and then in the southwest of France, he has been developing a singular plastic language since the 1950s based on the relationship between color, form, space, and architecture. His work draws its influences from the cut-outs of Henri Matisse, the Cubism of Pablo Picasso, the research of Constantin Brancusi, the Neoplasticism of Piet Mondrian, and Theo van Doesburg, while affirming a personal writing where geometric rigor dialogues with great chromatic sensitivity.

Pierre Clerk studied fine arts at McGill University, Loyola College, the School of Art and Design of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, before continuing his training at the Académie Julian in Paris and then at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. These years of learning nourished a deep reflection on the construction of pictorial space and the interactions between painting and sculpture. Installed in New York starting in 1959, he actively participated in the renewal of the American art scene while developing an independent work, counter to the abstract expressionism then dominant.

Pierre Clerk's practice is characterized by compositions with clean geometric forms, where color planes create effects of depth, rhythm, and movement. An admirer of Fernand Léger, he considers color an element capable of simultaneously becoming volume, structure, and energy. His research progressively extends to monumental sculpture, bas-reliefs, tapestries, and engraving, in which he transposes the principles of his pictorial vocabulary. Several of his monumental works, notably Waterside Plaza (1977) in Manhattan and City Candy (1983) in Toledo (Ohio), attest to his interest in the dialogue between the work, architecture, and public space.

Pierre Clerk's career was marked very early by international recognition. In 1955, he was selected for the New Talent Exhibition of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, before participating the following year in the Recent American Acquisitions exhibition at the same museum. He subsequently exhibited in many prestigious institutions and galleries, including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (1957), Il Cavallino in Venice (1958), Gimpel Hanover in Zurich (1971), the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse (1976-1977), the Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris (1978 and 1981), the Bordeaux Underwater Base (2011), the Gajac Museum in Villeneuve-sur-Lot with the exhibition Driven to Abstraction (2013), the Thomas Bernard – Cortex Athletico Gallery in Bordeaux and Paris (2009, 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2017), as well as Francis Maere Fine Arts in Ghent in 2020-2021 with the exhibition Paintings – Sculptures.

His works are today in the collections of many major institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the National Gallery of Art of Washington, the National Gallery of Canada, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the Brooklyn Museum. A laureate of several awards, including the Canada Council Awards (1971-1972), a Tamarind Fellowship (1972), a United States Information Service Exhibition Grant, and a Municipal Art Society Grant (1977), Pierre Clerk establishes himself as one of the important figures in contemporary geometric abstraction. His work, at the crossroads of abstract painting, contemporary sculpture, minimalism, constructivism, and kinetic art, continues to influence reflections on the relationships between color, space, and visual perception.
