Description
Self-taught artist, born in Novella in 1953 in Haute-Corse, Dominique Liccia has been drawing, painting and sculpting for many years. He is passionate about "Street-art", graffiti, tags and torn posters. When he is not expressing himself through drawings of exceptional strength, Liccia preferably paints on large wooden canvases by mixing several techniques and materials (wood, paper, pastel, paint, pencil...). Through her paintings, Liccia tries to convey strong political messages. He chose the path of protest and not that of pictorial aesthetics. With the evolution of society, the paintings of the artist have also changed. In his works, he denounces the political and economic excesses of today's world. “Art is an integral part of my existence, of my life, of my daily life, of my vision. I only live through art. One cannot avoid art on a daily basis. Art is everywhere, in the streets, on the roads, on the paths. Even where there is none, there is always a root of art that grows. Art is a way of living, of believing in yourself, of believing in everything that moves. Art makes life and life makes art. Daily history gives me so many elements, so many things to experience, that I can't help denouncing the atrocities. The world is an atrocity organized by the media, by politicians, by high technologies. I can't help myself, turning my head back. The world always needs someone to show that life belongs to the one who makes things happen… I'm not looking for the beauty of the colors, or that of the line. There is a certain form of indifference to all this. I am not a perfectionist of line or drawing. I draw what I feel, what I see. This is how I see art. One day life will prove me right. When I paint, I do not live with pictorial aesthetics, I do not seek beauty in my works, but the strength to destroy everything that goes against the existence of aesthetics... I am not not a destroyer of art. It is the truth that incites me to fight, to vibrate the reality of the Soul… I do not paint what I see, but what I have seen. I don't consider myself an artist. I realize what I am, the word artist is too big for me. I'm next to all of that. I leave institutionalized art in the hands of the powerful…….” Dominique Liccia was born in Novella (Corsica) in 1953. He has painted and sculpted for many years. He has a passion for “street-art”, graffiti, and ripped posters. Liccia rather paints on tall wooden boards and uses mixed media (wood, paper, pastel, paint, pencil…) Through his works, Liccia tries to give a strong political message. He has chosen to protest and not to show pictorial esthetics. The artist's paintings have changed with the evolution of the society. He condemns in his works the political and economic drifts of our world.

Presentation

Dominique Liccia was born in Novella, Corsica in 1953. Coming from a family of workers who did not receive an intellectual education, it is through his readings that he gets into contact with the arts. A painter of art brut, he began to claim his ideas on the city walls. His style of painting is very violent, expressive and especially engaged.

In 1968, the year of unrest and riots, he was working any jobs he could find. At the same time, he began to develop an interest for art and especially for sculpture. In the 1980s, he was an activist for the rights of his land and his people and became increasingly focused on his painting and on political messages.

In 1990, he made his debut in the art world, showing three paintings at the winter salon in Lyon. Three years later, he had his first solo show at the Gerard Chomarat Gallery in the 8th arrondissement of Lyon. The critics began to show an interest in his work. His artistic career took off.

He has been painting and sculpting for many years. He is passionate by street-art, graffiti, tags and street posters. He prefers to paint on large wooden pieces and he uses mixed techniques (wood, paper, pastel, painting, pencils...).

Through his paintings, he tries to share his strong political messages. Liccia has chosen the direction of protest and not that of pictorial aesthetic. With the evolution of society, his paintings have also changed. In his paintings, he denounces the political and economic problems of the world.
