Description
Pastel Nudes XXVIII is an emotionally charged pastel drawing by Ukrainian artist Ivan Tverdun, created from a live studio model in 2024. Combining expressive line work with soft yet vibrant colour transitions, the artwork captures the human body not as a static object of observation, but as a dynamic emotional presence. Tverdun intentionally avoids academic perfection, instead embracing spontaneity, vulnerability, and psychological intensity. The reclining female figure appears both intimate and elusive, emerging through layered gestures, blurred contours, and luminous passages of pastel.
The work strongly evokes the legacy of Egon Schiele and the European Expressionists, particularly in its distorted proportions, emotional directness, and restless linear energy. Yet unlike the harsher existential tension often associated with Schiele, Tverdun introduces a softer lyrical atmosphere. The muted grey background becomes an open psychological space within which flashes of neon green, red, pink, and warm orange create an almost dreamlike aura around the figure. These contrasting colours intensify the sense of physical presence while simultaneously dissolving the body into abstraction.
Executed with remarkable freedom and confidence, Pastel Nudes XXVIII occupies the boundary between drawing and painting. The visible traces of the artist's hand, combined with the unfinished openness of the composition, create a feeling of immediacy rarely found in more polished figurative works. This piece will particularly appeal to collectors interested in contemporary figurative art, expressionism, modern pastel drawing, and emotionally resonant representations of the human form. As with many of Tverdun's works, the image continues to unfold psychologically the longer one observes it.
Presentation
Ivan Tverdun (b. 1961) is a professional Ukrainian painter and draftsman based in Lviv, Ukraine. He graduated from the Lviv College of Decorative and Applied Art named after Ivan Trush in 1980 and from the Lviv Academy of Arts in 1985. Since 1995, he has been a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine.
Tverdun's artistic practice spans a wide range of styles and media. His early works reflect a strong interest in symbolism, esoteric themes, and philosophical reflection. To balance this intellectual focus, he often turned to plein air painting—a way to engage directly with nature and “clear the mind," as he describes it.
In recent years, Tverdun has concentrated on vivid, expressive landscapes and cityscapes in oil, marked by bold colour and post-impressionistic energy. At the same time, he continues to develop a parallel body of pastel works—particularly nudes and portraits—demonstrating his strong command of line and emotional nuance. Across all genres, his work reveals a deep sensitivity to light, atmosphere, and human presence.
Recognised for his distinctive style and emotional immediacy, Ivan Tverdun is considered an established figure within the Ukrainian contemporary art scene. His works are held in private collections across Ukraine, Europe, and beyond, and he is represented by several galleries in Ukraine and Poland. He has participated in numerous exhibitions both nationally and internationally, including in the United States, Austria, Poland, Switzerland, and Germany.
