Description
A solitary silhouette crosses space on a white bicycle. The character, dressed in a dark suit, seems to glide with balance on the narrow edge of a concrete wall. This composition plays on a marked contrast between the lightness of the movement and the rigidity of the support.
The blue sky occupies the upper part of the painting. It brings a serene clarity in contrast to the gray and imposing mass of the wall. This latter, marked by regular dots and vertical lines, evokes an urban structure or a border.
The artist uses acrylic to create matte surfaces and precise blocks of color. The line is sharp, almost graphic, emphasizing the fragility of man in the face of architecture. The upright posture of the cyclist suggests a calm determination in an austere environment.
This 2020 creation explores the tension between freedom and constraint. The bicycle becomes a means of passage, a way to fly over physical obstacles.
The precarious balance of the subject draws the eye towards the top of the canvas. The detail of the colored wheels brings a touch of modernity to this frozen scene.
Presentation
Khaled Hourani is one of the most influential Palestinian multidisciplinary conceptual artists. He is also a curator, writer, and cultural organiser whose practice explores everyday life, movement, borders, and the relationship between art and society. Working across painting, photography, installation, sculpture, and conceptual projects, Hourani often uses familiar objects, situations, and cultural references to consider how political conditions influence everyday experience. His work combines humour, imagination, and critical reflection to question ideas of access, mobility, and cultural exchange.
Born in Hebron in 1965, Hourani studied History at Hebron University in 1987. Alongside his artistic practice, he has held important positions within Palestinian cultural institutions, including the Palestinian Ministry of Culture and the International Academy of Art Palestine. His project Picasso in Palestine, which brought a work by Pablo Picasso to Ramallah in 2011, became an important example of his interest in borders, movement, and access to art. Hourani continues to work as an artist, curator, and cultural organiser across Palestine.
