Description

This is a rare lithograph by the Italian artist Tono Zancarano, in a limited edition of 50/100 produced in 1983. The work is published in the catalog of engravings, which is not available for sale. It will be sent flat with all related documentation. There is an annotated archive of the artist's works.

This artwork presents an intriguing blend of bright and warm hues, expertly capturing the viewer's attention. Two figures, prominently featured, are outlined with bold lines that exude confidence and clarity. The left figure's gaze is intense, with large, expressive eyes, and is complemented by a cascade of white hair. The right figure, au naturel, stands with poise and strength, her posture indirect, suggesting a sense of movement or narrative. The background's soothing teal contrasts beautifully with the vibrant reds and oranges of the figures, enhancing their presence. Distinct golden accents, resembling horns, add an enigmatic quality, inviting viewers to explore themes of duality and identity. This composition is a striking example of how color and form can be masterfully combined to create a piece that is both visually captivating and intellectually stimulating.

Tono Zancanaro, Leopardiana 2
Italy  • 1906

Presentation

Antonio Zancanaro - also known as TONO - (1906-1985). After a promising start in a sports career, he began to paint as a self-taught in 1932. He trained mainly in Florence, in contact with Ottone Rosai, and in Milan, where he attended Ernesto Treccani, Renato Guttuso and other exponents of the anti-fascist cultural environment.

He traveled abroad a lot, especially during the regime, and was always a member of the Communist Party. His production moved above all in the realism field, with pictorial cycles depicting the most humble social realities both in the north and in the south of Italy. Particularly well known was the series by Gibbo, a surreal and caricature character inspired by Mussolini.
