Description
This is a rare lithograph by Italian artist Tono Zancarano, limited edition of 38/100 made in 1983. The work is published in the catalog of engravings which is not available for sale. It will be sent flat with all related documentation. There is an annotated archive of the artist's works.
This artwork features three stylized figures characterized by bold outlines and a limited color palette of ochre and turquoise. The figures are positioned closely, emphasizing their physical connection and shared expression. Their stark white hair contrasts sharply against the vibrant background, which includes a serene turquoise sea and a crescent moon above, suggesting a night or twilight setting. The artist employs a minimalistic yet expressive style, combining elements of abstraction and figuration. The use of strong, simplified lines lends a sense of fluidity and motion to the composition, while the calm sea and moon evoke tranquility. This artwork stands out for its evocative use of color and form, capturing a moment of introspective unity among the figures, drawing the viewer into its contemplative mood.
Presentation
Antonio Zancanaro - also known as TONO - (1906-1985). After a promising start in a sports career, he began to paint as a self-taught in 1932. He trained mainly in Florence, in contact with Ottone Rosai, and in Milan, where he attended Ernesto Treccani, Renato Guttuso and other exponents of the anti-fascist cultural environment.
He traveled abroad a lot, especially during the regime, and was always a member of the Communist Party. His production moved above all in the realism field, with pictorial cycles depicting the most humble social realities both in the north and in the south of Italy. Particularly well known was the series by Gibbo, a surreal and caricature character inspired by Mussolini.
