This photo captures another side of the movie star that was Steve McQueen. Undoubtedly the real McQueen when he was living his passion as a race car driver.
March 21, 1970, night fell on the arrival of the 12 Hours of Sebring, the 2nd event on the calendar of the International Championship of Makes, and the private Porsche 908, driven by Peter Revson and Steve McQueen, tailed the Ferrari 512S of Andretti/Vaccarella/Giunti until the checkered flag.
However, a few weeks before the prestigious race held in central Florida on a former airfield, McQueen broke his foot while motocrossing. Despite being in a cast, he managed to drive his Porsche 908, but had to hand over the wheel of the prototype to Peter Revson far more often than initially planned. This marked the beginning of a great friendship between the two drivers. Revson was one of the best American drivers of the time and was recommended to McQueen by Gérard Crombac, editor-in-chief of Sport Auto magazine and McQueen's technical advisor during the filming of Le Mans.
With his fellow racing drivers, Steve McQueen is no longer a movie star; he becomes once again the passionate motorsport enthusiast he has always been, forgetting that his insurers forbid him from driving…
LAT possesses the world's largest archive of motorsport images. Their storage room houses over 18 million images, approximately half of which are negatives, or even glass plates, in black and white.
From the very first edition of "Autocar" published in 1895, to the present day, all kinds of road races and Grand Prix events have been featured, with a sharp increase in volume from 1924 onwards, followed by the first color photos in the mid-1950s.
