Presentation

Hassan Hajjaj, born in 1961 in Larache, Morocco, is a celebrated multidisciplinary artist whose work seamlessly blends traditional Moroccan influences with contemporary pop culture. Often referred to as Morocco's answer to Andy Warhol, Hajjaj is entirely self-taught, developing a distinctive artistic language that spans photography, design, filmmaking, fashion, and installation art. After moving to London as a teenager, he became deeply influenced by the city's dynamic hip-hop, reggae, and club scenes, which, combined with his North African heritage, shaped his vibrant, pattern-rich aesthetic. His work frequently explores themes of identity, consumerism, and cultural fusion, using bold colors, repurposed everyday objects, and striking compositions. His photography, which he began pursuing seriously in the late 1980s, is particularly renowned for its Pop Art sensibilities, drawing inspiration from fashion photography and the studio portrait traditions of Malick Sidibé. His signature style involves meticulously staged portraits framed with everyday Moroccan materials—such as soda cans and textiles—elevating ordinary subjects into icons of contemporary culture.

In recent years, Hajjaj has expanded his creative reach, focusing on capturing international musicians and performers in his signature "rockstar" portrait series. His work continues to gain global recognition, with exhibitions at prestigious institutions such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where his film debut offered an immersive exploration of music, identity, and cultural heritage. His influence also extends into the fashion world, where he has collaborated with luxury brands and designers, further blurring the lines between art, design, and commercial imagery. As one of the most sought-after contemporary African artists, Hajjaj continues to push artistic boundaries, merging global influences with deep-rooted Moroccan traditions to create a striking, immersive visual universe.

His works are now held in the collections of prestigious international institutions, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and the Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden (MACAAL) in Marrakech. Among his major solo exhibitions are My Rock Stars Experimental, Volume 1 (2011) and Volume 2 (2013) at The Third Line (Dubai), La Caravane (2015) at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (Paris), Andy Wahloo (2019) at MACAAL in Marrakech, and The Path (2022) at The Third Line. He has also participated in several international group exhibitions dedicated to contemporary African art, including Making Africa at the Vitra Design Museum, Africa Is No Island at MACAAL, as well as collateral events of the Venice Biennale. These exhibitions have further established his reputation as one of the leading figures in contemporary photography and African contemporary art on the international stage.
