Inspired by modernist portraiture and Fauvist color freedom, this expressive acrylic work on heavyweight professional acid-free paper combines bold contouring, intuitive brushwork, and saturated complementary tones to explore feminine identity through a stylized, introspective figure.
In New Essence, French artist Natalya Mougenot presents a frontal, elongated female presence poised between abstraction and self-realization. The olive-toned face is distilled to its essentials—eyes gently closed, features simplified—inviting the viewer into a moment of inward clarity rather than outward display. “I don't paint to reproduce reality," Natalya explains. “I paint to reveal what is felt but not always visible."
A luminous arc of deep cobalt hair frames the head like a contemporary halo, edged with coral and electric orange. Cool blues vibrate against the warmth of the bold orange garment, creating emotional tension and harmony at once. “My process is intuitive," she says. “I never over-plan. I trust my instinct. The painting tells me where it wants to go."
The elongated neck, layered with vertical strokes of peach, rose, and moss green, becomes a symbolic passage between thought and strength—between vulnerability and resilience. A sharply structured emerald collar introduces compositional balance, while four softly painted buttons descend in quiet repetition, grounding the figure in understated rhythm.
Working on heavyweight professional acid-free paper enhances the immediacy of each gesture. The surface absorbs pigment deeply, preserving both texture and spontaneity. Brushstrokes remain visible, edges intentionally unresolved. “Authenticity in art is essential to me," Natalya reflects. “If a painting feels too controlled, it loses its soul. I want every mark to remain honest."
The theme of New Essence resonates powerfully within the broader narrative of women and transformation. The closed eyes suggest not retreat, but inner alignment—a return to self. This is a woman who does not seek approval; she embodies her own becoming. “For me, this work speaks about women reconnecting with their inner strength," Natalya shares. “About evolving, transforming, yet never losing who they truly are."
Every piece in which Natalya depicts women carries a deeply personal dimension. As a woman herself, her figures are reflections of lived experience—growth, change, resilience. “Each woman I paint holds something of me," she says. “I have gone through different transformations in my life, but I have always kept my inner strength. That strength finds its way onto the canvas."
The bold chromatic contrasts—cool and warm, fluid and structured—mirror the complexity of feminine identity: softness alongside determination, introspection alongside presence. Simplified features resist conventional definitions of beauty, instead embracing universality and essence. “Women are often defined from the outside," Natalya notes. “In my work, they define themselves from within."
Rooted in intuitive expression and unwavering sincerity, New Essence becomes more than a portrait—it is a statement of renewal and quiet power. Ideal for a contemporary interior, creative studio, or empowering space, the work radiates individuality and resilience—an ode to authenticity, transformation, and the enduring strength of women.

Natalya is a contemporary french artist living in Lyon.
She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes.
She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country.
She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now.
In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism, which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult.
As an artist and as a woman she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion, is the pillar for the inner adult.
Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference.
She works rapidly and is constantly sensitive to the details.
Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach.
