With Pots of Pigments, Stéphane Braud offers a luminous meditation on color in its most elemental state. The artist does not merely depict hues; he reveals the very substance from which painting is born. Each pot becomes a chamber of chromatic concentration, where the pigment—fixed, stabilized, almost mineralized—discloses its primal density. This fixation does not diminish the vitality of the material; on the contrary, it heightens its presence, as though the color, immobilized within its container, continued to vibrate from within.
The series plays with the repetition of a single motif to better assert the individuality of each shade. Incandescent red, deep blue, radiant yellow, acidic green, saturated magenta—each pigment stands as an autonomous entity, a character, an energy. The pot, a simple vessel, becomes a pedestal that magnifies the color and grants it an almost sculptural dimension. The splashes, drips, and traces along the surface recall the gesture, the studio, the physicality of the painter's craft.
Confronted with these nine chromatic presences, the viewer's gaze circulates, compares, breathes. The neutral background, deliberately silent, allows the color to occupy the entire symbolic space. Braud brings us back to the origin of artistic creation: before form, before composition, there is pigment—raw material, primal force. In this work, color is no longer a tool; it becomes subject, body, and ultimately, a work in its own right.
Stéphane Braud, born in Libourne in 1955, is today considered as one of the greatest underwater painters in the world. He is also known as the "blue fisherman".
He creates his paintings from nature, directly under the sea.
Self-taught, he began painting at the age of 19.
From 1974, he travels through Africa. It took him more than 20 years of research to finally recreate on his canvases the atmosphere of the Maghreb, the effect of time on the doors discolored by the sun. Unique, his doors are of a sensitive realism and an unequalled depth.
In 1980, he flies to Reunion Island where he sets up his workshop. Passionate about diving, he naturally began to paint underwater.
Today, installed in Italy, he works on a new concept : "the pots of paint". In a unique format and on a metal support he paints pots in which he inserts pigments that will bring their light and color to each pot. Then assembled in panel these paintings allow to constitute unique sets. They lead the viewer to question the nature of the material that produces the work and which is itself put into abyss in its own reproduction.
His works are exhibited worldwide.
