Description

His painting is a language in which the artist's practiced gesture finds expression in the material itself, transforming each canvas into a performance. His canvases transcend spatial boundaries, playing with verticality and horizontality, light and shadow. They open up to infinite depth, inviting the viewer to explore beyond the material, to traverse layers and transparencies. Primary colors, the eruptions and fractures of the world blend in his canvases, creating a visual language that invites reflection. He conceives his canvases as interior landscapes, where emotion, memory, and humanity converge.

Presentation

Marc Trabys, born in 1952, is a French painter based in Saint-Cyprien, in the Pyrénées-Orientales. A recognized figure in contemporary abstract painting, he has developed a body of work for over forty years where matter, gesture, and color become the vectors of a deep reflection on the inner landscape and memory. His work is part of the tradition of lyric abstraction, while enriching itself with influences from abstract expressionism and a constant dialogue between spontaneity and technical mastery. His compositions, mainly executed in oil on canvas, explore the notions of chaos, balance, and light through a free gesture and generous material, making each work a space for contemplation and emotion. Abstract painting, oil on canvas, contemporary art, lyric abstraction, pictorial material, gesture, color, and inner landscape constitute the foundations of his artistic approach.

Since his first exhibition in 1980, Marc Trabys has built an international career marked by numerous exhibitions in France and abroad. His works have been exhibited in cities such as Paris, London, Moscow, Washington, Dakar, Libreville, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Nouméa, or even Papeete, testifying to the universal reach of his pictorial language. Nourished by European, African, and Asian cultural influences, he claims an artistic lineage with Zao Wou-Ki, Zoran Mušič, as well as with the poetic universes of Guillaume Apollinaire and Léopold Sédar Senghor, references that irrigate his sensitive approach to painting and space.

After exploring human figuration for several years, Marc Trabys returned to abstraction in 2009, following a commission that marked a decisive turning point in his career. He rediscovered what he considers his original language, reconnecting with an instinctive painting where the first gesture gives birth to a permanent dialogue between the artist and the canvas. Refusing any predetermined composition, he gradually builds his works through superimpositions, erasures, ruptures, and rebalancing, constantly seeking the point of meeting between rigor and letting go. This intuitive approach lends a particular depth to his paintings, where transparencies, textures, and material accidents reveal imaginary landscapes and spaces open to interpretation.

The works of Marc Trabys are regularly presented in contemporary art galleries and exhibitions, notably at Lille Art Up!, as well as within French galleries such as Arts Évasion Galerie and Galerie Droit de Regard. His painting attracts collectors with its expressive power, the richness of its material, and its ability to transform chaos into visual harmony. Today, Marc Trabys continues an exacting search around abstract painting, color, light, and the pictorial gesture, affirming a deeply personal work that holds a recognized place on the French and international contemporary art scene.
