In Chasing Monet, the painting does not seek to represent light: it attempts to pursue it in its most unstable, most fleeting form. The work is rooted in this fundamental tension inherited from Impressionism—that of a gaze confronted with the impossibility of capturing reality. But here, the quest is no longer for landscape; it becomes a quest for perception itself. The canvas does not depict a place; it conveys a state of vision.
The composition is built around a subtle chromatic shift between deep blues and radiant yellows. This vertical transition evokes less a horizon line than an atmospheric phenomenon: a rising of light, a slow vibration of colored matter. Splashes, drips, and micro-glitter create a space without center or hierarchy, where each particle seems animated by its own autonomy. The eye never settles permanently; it wanders, absorbed in an infinity of details that appear and then vanish just as quickly.
The title, Chasing Monet, reveals the work's inherent ambiguity. It is neither a direct homage nor a stylistic reinterpretation of Claude Monet, but rather a reflection on what he made possible in the history of perception: the awareness that light always eludes those who attempt to capture it. Monet painted variations on a single motif to approach this instability of the visible; here, this exploration is transposed into the realm of contemporary abstraction. The Impressionist brushstroke becomes an explosion, a fragmentation, a pulverization of the gesture.
The work thus engages in a dialogue with the legacy of lyrical abstraction and all-over painting, while retaining a profoundly atmospheric sensibility. Color is never merely decorative; it acts as a perceptual energy. Dense, almost aquatic blues establish a meditative depth, while yellows and coral accents diffuse a solar warmth that seems to emanate from the canvas itself. This coexistence of immersion and brilliance produces an experience akin to sensory memory—like the hazy recollection of a landscape bathed in late afternoon light.
Chasing Monet ultimately questions our desire to hold onto what, by its very nature, eludes us: a reflection, a sensation, a moment of clarity. Painting then becomes less an object than an attempt—fragile and persistent—to pursue the unattainable. In this pursuit, the painting affirms that light is never a given; it is always disappearing at the very moment it appears.
Gaëlle Wagner is a best-selling French painter to follow in the coming years.
Through her exhibitions, captivating performances and international sales, she reveals her artistic soul to the world, letting her compositions speak for her.
His works are collected both in France and abroad (United States, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, England, etc.)
Born in 1984 in Strasbourg, she developed a pronounced taste for art from a very young age. In middle school and then in high school, she became passionate about visual arts classes and photography. She draws regularly in her free time with a friend with whom they develop this common passion.
As a young adult, she continued to train at the Beaux-Arts in Strasbourg and at the Esad in Orléans in film photography and drawing. She visits museums and contemporary art exhibitions.
Since then, inspired by photographic composition, she has continued to develop a unique artistic language, balancing harmony and energy, emotions and abstraction, and thus revealing herself in abstract expressionism.
Wagner has been exhibiting regularly for around fifteen years in several French cities including Paris, Strasbourg, Nancy, Orléans, on the Atlantic coast and in the Center Val de Loire region, where she also performs live in front of the public.
An emerging artist, she captures the essence of abstract expressionism with profound sincerity.
His talent transcends the boundaries of traditional art, and continues to inspire and amaze with every brushstroke.
