Description
Today, she is known for her work focusing on medicinal leaves. On canvas, Rosemary did not seek to represent the visible world as it appears to the eye, but rather to evoke what pulsates beneath. Her works, composed of delicate pointillist touches or undulating patterns, seem to vibrate with a silent energy. In them, she evokes the seasons, the movements of the winds, the growth of medicinal plants, animal tracks, and the paths of her ancestors.
Her style is distinguished by its organic fluidity. There is a kind of timelessness in her compositions: something both ancient and contemporary. Rosemary's sources of inspiration are deeply rooted in the Dreaming stories—that time of origins when the world was formed. But even more so, it is the very landscapes she travels through, the plants she gathers, the memories of the elders, the ceremonies in which she participates, that nourish her hand and her eye. She paints to transmit, to remember, to bring to life.
Presentation
Rosemary was born in the mid-1950s. From a group, the Anmatyerre, whose roots run deep in the ancestral soil of the bush, she grew up surrounded by orally passed-down stories, sacred tales, ancient knowledge and landscapes full of spirituality.
She began her career creating batiks, like most artists in Utopia, and started painting on canvas in 1988. She is capable of painting using a wide variety of techniques. She has many talented artists in her family, including her aunt Emily Kame, her brother Greenie Purvis, and her sister Evelyn Pultara. Today, she is known for her work focusing on medicinal leaves.
