Urban art has now established itself as one of the most dynamic movements in contemporary creation, emerging from the streets of major cities before conquering galleries and institutions around the world.

Appearing in New York neighborhoods in the late 1960s, driven by hip-hop culture and the first generations of writers taking over walls and subway cars, it developed a visual language based on tagging, graffiti, and stenciling, governed by strict codes of style and peer recognition.

Figures such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Keith Haring began, from the 1980s onward, to bridge the gap between the street and the art market, paving the way for a gradual legitimization that would culminate with the Banksy phenomenon and the emergence of a global scene encompassing forms of expression as diverse as collage, mosaic, and trompe-l'œil interventions.
