Description
A monochromatic symphony of indigo and cobalt. This acrylic painting captures a musical ensemble through a complex lens of abstract figuratism. The composition vibrates with energy. Rhythmic lines slice through the canvas. They create a mosaic of geometric fragments and swirling patterns.
Three musicians emerge from a sea of blue. Their forms are stylized and surreal. The central figure holds a steady presence. To the sides, the artists merge with their instruments. The textures mimic the organic flow of sound. Every curve and angle contributes to a sense of synchronized harmony.
This artwork reflects a profound connection to cultural heritage. It blends tradition with a dreamlike sensibility. The artist utilizes a fragmented spatial arrangement to evoke the improvisation of a live performance. Depth is achieved not through perspective, but through layers of overlapping shapes and varying shades of blue. Each stroke emphasizes a precise, calculated movement. The result is a visual representation of auditory passion. This piece stands as a testament to resilience and creativity, blending structured geometry with the fluid spirit of music.
Presentation
The African artist Angu Walters' studio is in the NW Cameroon city of Bamenda which has since 2017 found itself at the very center of a brutal civil war. There are not a lot of places more perfectly remote where a gifted artist seeking to emerge from obscurity faces greater obstacles.
Angu got his start as a student of the noted American-born Cameroonian artist Nzante Spee.
Angu paints in diverse styles, most often abstract figurative and the surreal. In addition to music-themed paintings, his work often focuses on family life and traditional African village life. His works express surrealism because he believes that his dreams are inspirational to his life and works. He often titles his favorite paintings, “The Happy Family”, because to him the family is the foundation on which a successful professional and matrimonial life is built. Many paintings express his special reverence for mothers.
His works are exhibited in galleries world-wide and in Africa at the Cameroon National Museum in Yaoundé. Following the pattern set by his own mentor. Angu has helped guide a number of younger artists.
