‘Contemplation 2’ is a medium size contemporary lacquer on wood panel nude painting created by Vietnamese artist Dinh Hanh in 2017. This square format features a nude figure depicted on a golden background. A woman is sitting, hugging her legs, while she is gently bending her head forward. The archaistic treatment of her feet and hands adds to the minimalist feel of the piece while the dark hue of her long black hair contrasts beautifully with the warmth of the textured golden background. Hanh has harnessed the traditional and ancient medium of lacquer on wood technique and expresses his modern interpretation through a study of the female form. His graceful and flowing approach is evident in his enchanting expressions of femininity. The curvature and clean lines often evoke a comparison to a romantic bygone era. Presentation
Born in Vietnam in 1957, Dinh Hanh studied art at the prestigious Hanoi Academy of Fine Arts. His stunning works are the result of his use of the traditional technique of multi-layered lacquer on wood. This technique typically features a palate of gold combined with various shades of red and black. In addition, the lines are generally very distinct and crisp.
The subject of Dinh Hanh’s work is usually a woman, or women, often in a tucked position. The shapes and lines of his subjects very much bring to mind Matisse’s nude blue series, with a golden twist.
