Description
Q 1.
I read an interview you did in which you said you paint the subjects and background
simultaneously. Is that still true today?
Ans
Yes I still paint both subjects and background simultaneously.
By extending dabs colour in the subject matter into the background and vice-versa, an illusion of
movement is created.
Q 2.
How do you conceptualize the relationship between those two?
Ans
The two spaces are equally important in my work. The background echoes the movement of
figures and therefore create a pulsating surface that brings the composition alive.
Q 3.
What role does movement play in your work?
Ans
I often say my work is all about MOTION and EMOTION. Movement, motion, ripples, reflections,
joy, happiness etc play a big part in making my work dynamic. Actually movement is the
identifying feature.
Q 4.
What are some of feminist issues you are concerned with at the moment?
Ans
Currently I am focusing more on younger ladies who are also compelled by the socioeconomic
situation to work in order to provide for their families.
However, I always focus on the positive energy of enjoying one's work. These ladies always
exude confidence, beauty and grace which I find fascinating.
Q 5.
Are there other topics you are thinking about working on in your work?
Ans
I am now doing more beach scapes because I was born right along the Atlantic ocean. I have
always found the sea totally captivating.
I am also using the drone view to develop abstract compositions
Presentation
Betty Acquah, a prominent Ghanaian painter, is celebrated for her vibrant and intricate artworks that delve into the essence of Ghanaian womanhood. Her paintings vividly portray the trials, ambitions, celebrations, and successes of ordinary inspirational women, encapsulating their resilience and spirit.
In 2024, Acquah unveiled "Store House of Peace," an acrylic painting on canvas that beautifully captures the serenity and inner strength of women. In January 2025, Acquah introduced "Sister and Friend," a work that celebrates friendship and solidarity among women, emphasizing the importance of mutual support in female communities. The piece highlights the deep connections and understanding that bind women together, making it a powerful addition to her exploration of womanhood.
Acquah's artistic journey commenced at Wesley Girl's High and Holy Child schools in Cape Coast. She furthered her education at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, earning a first-class degree. She later pursued a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in painting at the same institution, following an interim course at the Tokyo School of Art in Japan. Her professional experience includes working at the Centre for National Culture in Accra, Ghana, and currently at the Berj Art Gallery in Accra.Acquah's work is characterized by a pulsating style and a delightful color palette, addressing thought-provoking themes on social issues. She employs techniques such as pointillism, oil painting, and acrylics to create dynamic compositions that convey movement and emotion. Her paintings often depict dancing children, costumed troupes, and celebratory scenes, enveloped in countless dots of acrylic, bringing her compositions to life
Acquah has participated in numerous exhibitions both within Ghana and internationally. Notably, her first solo exhibition was featured at the Pan African Festival of Arts and Music (PAFAM) held at the Trade Fair grounds in Accra. Subsequent exhibitions at the AMAHEMA Art Gallery and collaborations with eminent Ghanaian painters have solidified her position in the art world. Her works have been showcased in countries including India, Japan, Nigeria, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, reflecting the universality of her themes.
