We are not obliged to be attracted by these superimpositions of curves, it is nevertheless true that they call out to us!
These strikingly realistic deformed monsters are placed in oil or acrylic on canvas. But that's notz all, far from it.
The artist plays with superimpositions, which are clearly visible when one stands on the side of the canvas and the reflections of light accentuate the thicknesses.
Using the collage technique that was originally intended to stimulate creative invention, Marlin uses everything at his fingertips - pieces of fabric, tracing paper or sewing pattern paper - that he cuts, composes, mixes, enhances colours, even pieces of radiographs, femur, spine, skilfully placed in certain places to create shadows.
Marlin's work, very repetitive, does not fail to attract curiosity as in the circus we have fun at the show of the dwarf with multiple bumps doing his pirouettes on the track. We also think of the celluloid and rag dolls of our childhood, so flexible that we could safely twist their arms and legs and even sadistically zip the dark anchor points where the limbs were fixed.
All these "merciless and serious" characters constitute an unusual universe, sometimes frightening, but nuanced by a light and refined chromatic palette that softens the subject.
Pascal Marlin seems to us to be a tender inflating his fantasies to better tame them!by Colette Bertot
