Description
Camilo, 2014 by Celso Castro Pencil, Crayon on Cotton paper Image size: 39.2 H in. x 28 in. W Unframed
This artwork is a compelling charcoal and pastel drawing featuring an individual seated with a relaxed yet introspective demeanor. The primary focus lies on the figure’s hands, meticulously detailed and resting on their lap, generating a sense of contemplation. The subject wears a shirt with abstract patterns and bold designs, adding vibrancy against the otherwise monochromatic palette. Hints of red pastel skillfully introduce contrast, guiding the viewer's eye through the composition. The background remains intentionally ambiguous, ensuring complete attention is on the central figure. This deliberate use of minimalism juxtaposed with intricate detailing provides a profound depth to the piece. The artist's technique in capturing texture and expression through simple lines and shading is commendable, creating an evocative and thought-provoking image.
Presentation
Celso Castro is a reference in Colombian Caribbean plastic arts who has drawn, painted, sculpted and photographed penises for more than four decades.
In his works, Castro exalts the male genitalia, putting into tension the limits imposed by the sex/gender system that are part of an unquestioned patriarchal and phallocentric order. Most men
The ones he portrays are inhabitants of the Colombian coast, also constructing alternative ways of conceiving Latin American identity.
By breaking taboos on corporality and male sexuality, his work has been censored on many occasions due to public accusations of immorality and pornography.
