Description
Under Marilyn’s Skin by Lasveguix explores one of pop culture’s ultimate icons through a raw, urban, and deeply contemporary approach. Marilyn Monroe, a universal figure of glamour and seduction, is deconstructed, fragmented, and reimagined as a street poster exposed to time, gazes, and collective projections.
The artwork is built through successive layers of collage, torn paper, graffiti, and painterly interventions, creating the impression that Marilyn’s face emerges from a living wall. Her image—both instantly recognizable and visibly altered—appears to surface “under the skin” of the city, revealing the tension between public myth and intimate fragility.
The color palette shifts between strong contrasts and faded areas, reinforcing the duality between brilliance and disappearance. Ripped textures and paint marks evoke erosion, media overexposure, and the symbolic violence inflicted on female icons. Marilyn is no longer merely a symbol of beauty, but a surface for expression—a site of confrontation between desire, consumption, and identity.
With Under Marilyn’s Skin, Lasveguix questions the construction of modern myths and what remains of the individual behind the image. The artwork offers a sensitive and critical reading of fame, where the pop icon becomes an urban palimpsest, charged with emotion, memory, and contradiction.
Presentation
Guillaume Picart, known as Lasveguix, is a French artist from Seine-Saint-Denis, who began his artistic career as a graffiti artist under the pseudonym of Guix along the Canal de l'Ourcq, when he was teenager. After a break in artistic creation, he returned to his passion in 2022 and is currently working on the production of numerous works in various media, mainly inspired by the influence of pop art.
Lasveguix is directly inspired by Jacques Villeglé and Raymond Hains, and uses photographs of famous faces as well as torn posters to create his paintings. He then covers these supports with graffiti and splashes of paint, which gives life to colorful and powerful works, reminiscent of sections of urban walls torn from the street.
His artistic signature is based on his ability to give relief and volume to his paintings. He cultivates a real taste for the texture and material of torn paper, thus creating an impression of movement, by superimposing successive layers of paper.
