Description

This artwork, clearly a painting, captures with remarkable precision an intimate moment in an autumnal forest. The scene is dominated by a warm colour palette, mainly yellows, oranges and browns, which evoke a calming and melancholic atmosphere, typical of autumn. The trees, depicted with a certain delicacy and attention to detail, stretch towards the sky, their bare branches testifying to the recent fall of the leaves. Two figures occupy the foreground of the composition, adding a narrative dimension to the work. On the left, a figure seated on a fallen tree trunk, dressed in turquoise trousers and a white top, seems engaged in conversation or reflection. Her hands resting on the trunk add a sense of balance and stability. On the right, another figure, dressed in black with a long grey scarf, sits on the ground in a relaxed posture. The contrast between the positions and outfits of the two figures adds an interesting dynamic to the composition. The play of light is particularly skillful, with rays of sunlight filtering through the trees, creating shadows and reflections that add depth and realism to the scene. The texture of the leaves on the ground and the way they are almost ready to decompose are rendered with admirable precision. This work is distinguished by its ability to capture not only the visual beauty of the landscape but also the essence of a moment shared outdoors. The serene atmosphere, the subtle play of light and shadow, as well as the implied relationship between the two characters, make this painting both a faithful and poetic representation of an autumnal scene.

Thérèse Boucraut, Les deux amies II
France

Presentation

Thérèse Boucraut (born in 1930) grew up in the Petit-Bateau factory, a company created by her grandfather, then managed by her parents. During her childhood, she played in these buildings, these interior streets, a small closed town, full of forbidden games, discovering colors and materials, in the atmosphere of a craft profession: assembling shapes, creating new methods for weaving threads, searching for colors... In this context, she practiced drawing very early, and approached various techniques (watercolors, charcoals, tapestries, engraving, clay...) as evidence of a manual and physical practice of pictorial art.

Thérèse Boucraut paints from nature, and with models her painting is like an imaginary figurative theater but not realistic sometimes, the human figure is present as a testimony of the existence of objects then only the objects remain present, scattered, vibrant with life of yesteryear, the human figure is set in the space of the forest, or the workshop: the forest, the workshop, becoming a large theater, a space of suspended play. The scales change, and seem to question the place of the human: object or actor? Leaving the "Mural Painting" Workshop of the ENSAD, where Gromaire taught, and holding the diploma, in 1957, Thérèse Boucraut devoted herself to painting.

Two major trends at the time separated painters - all the creators who worked in and around the field of art - or even opposed them, sometimes violently. Abstraction and Figuration; in this context we will speak of a "return to figuration". Over the following years, even decades, the problem of the subject linked to the return to figuration was latent.
