Monochrome 7R, 2024

Sandrine Hartmann

This intensely captivating abstract artwork is distinguished by its bold, monochromatic use of black throughout. At first glance, the simplicity of the color may appear homogeneous, but a closer look reveals the richness of textures and shapes embedded within the canvas. Interlocking geometric shapes—primarily rectangles and horizontal lines—intertwine in a skillfully structured composition, creating a subtle yet distinct relief. The skillful use of mixed media is demonstrated through raised layers of paint, applied with impeccable skill. These layers provide a palpable tactile dimension, inviting the viewer to explore variations in depth and structure with their eyes. Textured elements—with grooves and raised patterns—add additional complexity, evoking both visual and sensory sensations. The work's monochromy foregrounds shadow, light, and subtle shades of black, revealing a myriad of tones and reflections that vary depending on the viewing angle. This technique enhances the dynamism of the piece, giving the impression that it is constantly evolving. This painting is a celebration of purity and minimalist sophistication, where every line and texture is meticulously calculated to create visual harmony. This work does not only capture the eye; it also encourages deep reflection on contrasts and the inherent beauty of simplicity. In short, it is a masterpiece that defies the conventions of color and form to offer an immersive and memorable artistic experience.
