Bouquet et livre, Circa 1950

Alexandre Rochat

This work of art, a still life depicting a vase of flowers, is distinguished by its mastery of the material and its subtly blended color palette. At the center of the composition, an elegant glass vase holds a bouquet of three flowers in pink and yellow hues. The petals, painted with notable thickness, give an almost palpable texture to the whole. The neutral background highlights the contrasts of the delicate roses, while the dull green of the leaves, treated with confident brushstrokes, emphasizes a discreet depth. The abrupt transition between the colors of the background and the flowers creates a striking relief effect, invariably drawing the eye to the central bouquet. The vase rests on a sturdy and well-defined wooden surface, accentuated by warm shades. This earthly anchoring is balanced by the presence of a book located in the background, whose pastel green cover subtly contrasts with the whole. The volume of the book and the delicately cast shadows testify to meticulous work on lighting and perspective. This painting stands out for its impressionistic interpretation, the impetuous texture of the brushstrokes emphasizing a spontaneous movement and a striking liveliness. The artist masterfully captures the fleetingness of natural beauty through a frozen moment, while infusing it with a contained and refined energy. This marriage between the rigor of the composition and the freedom of the execution makes this work a captivating and unique piece in the world of still lifes.
