Description
This captivating artwork depicts a kneeling nude man, his sculptural body taut as he is absorbed by his own reflection in a mirror-like surface. Skillful lighting highlights the man’s tense musculature, creating a complex interplay of shadows and light that enhances his intense introspection. The contrast between the vibrant skin and the white cloth heightens the dramatic tension of the scene. In the foreground, the artist’s tools, including brushes and a bottle, add an intriguing metatextual dimension, inviting the viewer to contemplate the artistic process itself. In the background, lemons depicted on a canvas introduce an eternal still-life element that contrasts the vitality of the human body with the calm of inanimate objects. The remarkable use of perspective showcases a nuanced skill in spatial arrangement, making the viewer question what is real and what is reflected. This visual ambiguity reinforces the theme of personal reflection, where the quest for self-understanding intertwines with the tangible realities of art and perception.
Presentation
Trained at the Beaux Arts de St-Étienne, in the 80's, Serge Kalinowski, turns to painting and its figurative representation.
Thus the portrait, the human body and nature are at the center of his artistic expression. In reference to the Ancients (Fragonard, Delacroix, Manet...) to the Moderns (Lucian Freud, Balthus, Dalí) or to the Contemporaries (Glenn Brown, Michael Borremans, Eric Fishl, Martin Eder...) the painter reworks the timeless works to offer a surrealist, poetic, sometimes provocative and burlesque look.
