Description
In this work, "O Gringo" seeks to convey the memory and impact of the 1755 earthquake and tsunami, one of the most devastating events in Portuguese history. This catastrophic event destroyed much of Lisbon, reducing it to ruins and leaving deep physical and emotional scars on its population. Recognized as one of the country’s most iconic moments, the 1755 earthquake also stands as a reflection on human fragility in the face of nature’s forces.
He uses the broken tile as a symbolic element to represent the earthquake. The tile, a major symbol of Portuguese culture, reflects Lisbon’s beauty and identity. When broken, it becomes a visual metaphor for the destruction caused by the seismic event. The fragility of the shattered tile evokes the vulnerability of the buildings and the lives lost during this tragic moment.
On the other hand, the tsunami that followed the earthquake is represented through the use of cardboard. The material, with its fragile and ephemeral texture, symbolizes the uncontrollable force of the waters that flooded Lisbon, sweeping everything in their path. This contrast between materials—the more enduring tile and the delicate cardboard—highlights the duality of power and destruction that defined this historical event.
Furthermore, the artist draws inspiration from the last representation of Lisbon in tiles, connecting the narrative of the past to the present. The decision to incorporate this reference reinforces the importance of preserving the city’s historical memory and demonstrates how art can serve as a bridge between generations, allowing reflection on Lisbon’s resilience and the rebuilding of a city that rose from the ruins.
The influences of the tiles from the Lisbon coastline are drawn from the Museu do Azulejo, one of the largest and most important museums in Portugal. It was within this museum’s rich history and collection that O Gringo found inspiration. In 2024, the artist had the honor of holding an exhibition at the Museu do Azulejo, which lasted for six months and attracted an average of 2,500 visitors per day. This exhibition allowed O Gringo to connect his artistic vision with the cultural heritage of Portuguese tiles, showcasing his unique approach to blending tradition with contemporary perspectives. The museum's significance as a hub for the preservation of tile art played a crucial role in shaping the influence that Lisbon’s coastline tiles had on his work.
Through this work, “O Gringo” invites the viewer to delve into echoes of the past, highlighting not only the destruction but also humanity’s capacity to rebuild and find new meaning. The use of materials and historical references creates a composition rich in symbolism and emotional depth.
Presentation
We would like to introduce you to O Gringo, the stage name of Bastien Tomasini, a French artist born in Nice, on the French Riviera, in 1988.
Fifteen years ago, his unique path began to take shape through an absolute passion for drawing, geometry, photography, history, and philosophy. Over more than a decade and a half of rigorous aesthetic research, the artist has built his own visual language that intersects heritage, history, urban art, and contemporary techniques, establishing himself today as a major representative of mixed media/hybrid art .
O Gringo develops a rich material ecosystem where his works function as narrative portals. Through his work, he tells global stories that travel from Asia to Africa, venturing into Europe to explore the Arab legacy left in Spain, Portugal, and Italy, as well as the significance of the Dutch city of Delft and its quest for that famous blue. Transcending borders and eras, the artist revisits French history through his iconic Marianne, journeys with azulejos to Mexico to rescue the figure of Frida Kahlo, and places all his favorite characters within a unique universe that masterfully blends history, theory, and imagination.
His hybrid approach defies two-dimensionality through a bold fusion of raw materials sculpted by the artist himself and avant-garde elements: hand-carved ceramics, wood and azulejos, combined with canvases, fine art paper, structural cardboard, cement, marble, liquid resin, acrylic paint, oil, charcoal and spray paint.
The institutional recognition of his work is undeniable. In June 2022, this career reached one of its most significant moments. At the invitation of the former director of the National Tile Museum, Dr. Alexandre Pais—current president of Museums and Monuments of Portugal—O Gringo presented the solo exhibition "Esperança Além do Horizonte" at the National Tile Museum in Lisbon, a production supported by Paris 75 Image. The exhibition occupied the museum's main hall for over six months, incorporating guided tours and community workshops.
Over the next three years, the artist's career continued to expand globally. Key milestones included the opening of the Capital of Culture in Aveiro and Ovar with a 300 m² solo exhibition, the publication of the book "Azulejo Vivo" (distributed at FNAC, Librairie Bertrand, and Ler Devagar), and the "Emotions" exhibition in the Place des Vosges in Paris, which featured the Director of the National Tile Museum of Lisbon. These were complemented by notable participation in Art Basel Miami Beach, as well as exhibitions in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and San Francisco.
Currently based in Portugal, O Gringo develops his work from his permanent studio, open year-round, and maintains a regular program at La Smart Galerie, within the renowned LX Factory in Lisbon, as well as in several other galleries worldwide. His approach confirms the continuity of a serious and consistent research, consolidating his recognition in the international market and within prestigious private collections.
