Description

A technique in constant metamorphosis: between breath, matter and memory.

Cécile Girard's paintings are the fruit of a long journey between Asian and Western civilizations, between technical know-how and listening to the inner breath.

From her first stays in China in the mid-1990s, and particularly in the province of Anhui, she discovered Xuan rice paper, which she very early chose to use in its traditional artisanal form, custom-made according to ancestral processes.

Very quickly, this medium becomes much more than a simple background. By kneading, crumpling, and thickening it, she gives it a new organic life: dense, textured, three-dimensional, yet supple. Through a bold treatment, she fuses Indian ink, acrylic, and oil, creating effects of transparency and opacity that are both rich and subtle.

His works find their inspiration in the Naxi pictograms of the Dongba culture, encountered during a decisive stay in Yunnan, but also in ancient Chinese characters. This symbolic vocabulary runs through his series like a buried memory, a reinvented ancient writing. The chromatic choice - deep blues, mineral greens, burnt oranges - evokes the landscapes of this region of southern China, and his technique is in the spirit of Zhongcai polychrome painting, while allowing for very contemporary ruptures.

The calligraphic approach is omnipresent: gesture and contour have an expressive intensity. They take up the foundations of Gufa Yongbi (the art of using the brush with structure and force), but liberated in a Western visual language. The planes, the lines, the dynamics of the space are inspired by Chinese landscape painting, but also by the compositional principles of Italian stained glass, in an unexpected dialogue between luminous partitioning and poetic openness.

As Dr. Ma Lin points out, Cécile Girard's works immerse thought in an ancestral time through their slate textures and pictograms. They bear the trace of primitivism as a spiritual quest, in the manner of the great modernist movements which, after Post-Impressionism or Cubism, questioned the origins of pictorial language.

In her most recent works, Cécile Girard explores a new format: the vertical scroll, thus reconnecting with the literate and nomadic spirit of Chinese painting. She applies the same transversal approach: different types of rice paper, always worked in depth (folds, layers, material), where the Chinese landscape is reinterpreted with a calligraphy brush, sometimes dipped in ink, sometimes in oil or acrylic.

These monochrome works—misty browns, mineral blues—combine transparency and density, in an increasingly meditative abstraction. They dialogue with the legacy of Chinese literati painters, whose philosophy of space and breath Cécile has assimilated: landscape becomes interiority, line becomes memory, matter becomes a trace of the living. As critic Gu Jiajun writes, her work goes beyond simple pictorial techniques. It offers a space for the modern transformation of Chinese painting, where a specific plastic spirituality flourishes—an abstraction that is both rooted and open to the world.

Between 2012 and 2015, she collaborated with the China Pavilion in Shanghai as well as Shanghai University, including lectures and publications at Shanghai Normal University.

In 2014, she participated in two exhibitions, at the Shanghai Mint Museum and in a group exhibition - with Chinese artists - in France and China, celebrating the 50th anniversary of relations between the two countries.

His works are present in the permanent collections of the Beijing Art Museum and the Duolun Museum of Modern Art in Shanghai.

Since 2012, she has also been involved in solo and group exhibitions with renowned Chinese institutions, such as the China Central Academy of Fine Arts and the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts.

In 2016, she had a joint exhibition, "Ross Lewis and Cécile Girard in Conversation", and a group exhibition at the ArtCN Gallery in Shanghai.

Finally, since 2019, she has collaborated with Galerie Xixi in China and since 2022, with Galerie Feng Shang in France.

The “Landscapes of China" exhibition celebrates the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between France and China in 2024.

Cécile Girard's paintings emerged from travels and encounters between Asian and Western civilizations.

Following a trip to China in the province of Anhui, Cécile decided to use a special local Xuan rice paper, made to measure and in the tradition of

Great Masters. By kneading, crumpling and thickening the rice paper, she gave it new life with a dense, textured, dimensional and yet flexible form.

His processing technique combines Chinese ink, acrylics and oil in bright, deep colors producing a rich artistic edet.

The inspirations behind these works are drawn from primitive Chinese characters and the use of pictograms of the Naxi minority of Dongba culture. The choice of shades, blue-greens and orange-reds, come from the landscapes of Yunnan with the use of the Zhongcai Hua technique or dense color painting. The emphasis is placed on the contours in the manner of Chinese calligraphy as well as the borrowing of constituent elements of the Chinese landscape. The division of space is inspired by the principle used in ancient Chinese claustras, principles converging with those of the treatment of light in the Italian Art of stained glass.

Cécile Girard creates her own pictorial vocabulary, a fusion of images expressing emotions and reflections using various elements and symbols from ancient China and Western aesthetics.
