Description
Hervé Maury paints animals as one paints landscapes or portraits, "living natures" that are funny and seductive in their apparent simplicity. Pigments and other materials blend together, movements and reliefs burst forth, capturing a special moment on each canvas. The artist transforms his enchanted bestiary into a family complicit in an everyday life in search of exoticism and absolute poetry. This work presents two dogs in a resolutely expressive and modern style. The thick contours and energetic features give a lively dynamic to the scene. The animals' round, oversized eyes immediately capture the eye, conveying a striking curiosity and innocence. The warm color palette, with shades of yellow and orange, adds liveliness to the image. Hervé Maury (b. August 18, 1961, Paris – currently based in Marseille) is a French contemporary painter and self‑taught visual artist, celebrated for his animal‑themed figurative works with a whimsical, naïve style. After spending eight years in metallurgy, Maury discovered his love for painting while decorating his apartment with insect motifs, then expanding to mammals, prompting encouragement from family and friends to pursue art professionally.
He captures the spirit of animals, dogs, cats, bears, fish, dragonflies, even giraffes and mice by using oversized expressive eyes that endow each creature with a unique personality. His palette is soft yet vibrant, inspired by Mediterranean hues, blending naïve illustration with deep poetic resonance.
Rooted in a hybrid movement of playful hyperrealism, pop‑animal art, and stylized illustration, Maury’s art conveys universal emotion and empathy. He invites viewers into a gentle world of visual warmth, subtle humor, and emotional connection.
