Gueule d'ours, 2025

Hervé Maury

Hervé Maury paints animals as one paints landscapes or portraits, "living natures" that are funny and seductive in their apparent simplicity. Pigments and other materials blend together, movements and reliefs burst forth, capturing a special moment on each canvas. The artist transforms his enchanted bestiary into a family complicit in an everyday life in search of exoticism and absolute poetry. This captivating work depicts a polar bear in a bold and textured manner. The use of soft, earthy colors, enhanced by touches of orange patterns, creates a striking contrast against the animal's voluminous coat. The bear's face, with its round, expressive eyes, exudes an endearing, almost human personality. The subtly worked background of the canvas highlights the central figure while adding visual depth. The artistic style, both naïve and sophisticated, gives the work a timeless and universal quality. The brushing and texturing techniques employed lend a tactile dimension, inviting the viewer to imagine the softness of the fur. It's a piece that manages to be both childlike and thoughtful, captivating attention with its originality and undeniable charm.
