Half the meaning, 2025

Yulia Belasla

In the painting, the artist abandons the narrative in its usual completeness. The painting depicts only a part — the boundary between the body, the gaze and space. The figure seems to slip over the edge of the painting, taking with it something that we will never know for sure. But it is precisely this lack of completeness that makes the image alive, mobile, almost breathing.

The plot of the painting is depicted on a natural canvas without a white ground, as the first layer of meaning that has not yet been covered by interpretation. Everything is extremely precise and restrained: lines, colors, emptiness. And the glass of wine is like an anchor for the eye, a red note in the score of silence.

This artwork is not about a woman, not about a drink, not about a scene. It's about the unsaid. It's about how a person searches for meaning, knowing that they will never get it in its entirety. We read faces, gestures, hints—but the truth always slips away, leaving us with only half. And yet, sometimes, that half is enough to feel everything.
