Description
Boris OA examines the human figure through an aesthetic of repetition and variation. The work deploys a constellation of faces with simplified, almost schematic features, set against a regular and vibrant background. The whole produces a sensation of suspended multiplicity: each portrait seems both singular and interchangeable, as if caught in a continuous flow of identities.
This work is part of a tradition of distanced representation of the portrait, where individuality is no longer an essence to be captured but a moving surface, constructed by the gaze, memory, or cultural signs. One thinks of the figures of Marlene Dumas or Yan Pei-Ming, artists for whom the portrait becomes a critical medium more than an exercise in resemblance.
In Boris OA's work, this approach translates into an assertive frontality and a visual language that borrows as much from comics as from outsider art. The faces, drawn in ink or brush, carry few psychological clues, but exude a strong collective presence. It is less the individual that is of interest here than the mass of faces, their coexistence, their silent circulation.
The vibrant blue of the background, almost textile, creates an effect of distancing, reinforcing the idea of humanity rendered abstract by its own repetition. It reflects on the image, its contemporary proliferation, but also on our way of existing through standard, recognizable but depersonalized forms.
Presentation
Boris Obregon was born in Chile in 1982. He currently lives and works in France where he settled in Sète.
He began his studies in Iquique, Chile where he studied architecture during 3 years. He then decided to move to Brazil where he joined an artistic training workshop in Sao Paolo in 2003.
Even if he gave up architecture to devote himself completly to his passion for painting, architecture has never really disappeared from his practice. In his chromatic landscapes graphic lines collide with each other, and in the portrayed scene. The surfaces distinguish one from the other but are placed in the same plane where the perspectives do not have any laws and let the characters evolve without limit. A same face can thus appear in front and on the side at the same time. This free interpretation of the composition lets us see his great technical mastery.
Boris Obregon paints mostly life scenes, daily life situations that he translates through his own reality. His narrative style is impregnated with a certain crazyness where we can find hybrid characters. Half human, animal or robot, the creatures that inhabit his pieces can have various expressions and facets, but they form a whole where the environment is definetly cheerful. Between free figuration and singular art, Boris Obregon manages to create a different universe from one piece to the next.
Each space of his urban fantasies is used, either by objects, decoration or the interaction among the crowd, there is always a detail which caughts up our attention.
Boris Obregon has exhibited his work mainly in South America, in Chile, Bolivia and Argentina, and recently in Europe at the Bugatti Fair in Milan.
