Description
SERB 1175
The oil painting on canvas titled "Sunflowers in the Garden" radiates warmth, abundance, and the simple beauty of rural life through its expressive use of impasto technique and rich, earthy colors. Dominating the composition are tall, vibrant sunflowers, their golden-yellow petals bursting outward like small suns, each one anchored by a deep, textured center in shades of burnt umber and crimson. The artist's technique, using thick strokes and visible layers of paint, gives the flowers a sculptural quality, as though they are growing right out of the canvas, swaying gently in the summer breeze. Surrounding the sunflowers are dense, lush green leaves rendered in a variety of hues—from cool emeralds to warm olive tones—creating a vibrant interplay of light and shadow. These leaves are not just background elements but full of life and volume, adding depth to the composition and emphasizing the vitality of the garden. The foliage appears to rustle with the suggestion of motion, as if the viewer has just stepped into this scene at a quiet moment between wind gusts. In the background, a rustic wooden shed peeks out from behind the towering flowers, its aged roof and dark doorway partially hidden by the overgrown plants. The structure is painted with subdued browns, purples, and gray-blues, adding an element of nostalgia and timelessness to the scene. It evokes the presence of human life—someone who once tended this garden, who may still live nearby, quietly enjoying the rhythms of nature. The old shed is neither prominent nor ignored; it becomes part of the landscape, seamlessly merging with the natural world around it. Beyond the garden, a haze of violet and blue suggests distant trees and hills cloaked in mist or softened by the humidity of a late summer afternoon. This atmospheric background contrasts beautifully with the sharp, sunlit foreground, pulling the viewer into a layered experience that shifts from the intimate to the expansive. There's a balance in the composition between clarity and mystery, between the grounded presence of the sunflowers and the dreamlike aura of the distance. Below the sunflowers, the lower half of the canvas blooms with untamed color—wildflowers, grasses, and patches of purple, pink, and lime green appear in irregular clusters, adding to the impression of a living, breathing garden that is both cultivated and free.

Works by Boris Serdyuk are held in museums in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions, as well as in private collections in Ukraine, European countries, the USA, Israel, and other countries.
In 2018, the artist entered the global art space of the creative platform in New York, where seven of his works were included in the catalog "Painting & Graphics."
Currently lives and works in Kremenchuk, Poltava Region.
Took his first steps in the world of visual arts within the walls of his local school, then studied at Yuriev-Polsky Pedagogical School. After graduation, he returned to his homeland and started working as a drawing and painting teacher.
Later, he realized that for an artist, creative freedom is essential. Thus, after seventeen years of teaching, he left the profession to focus on his creative work. The artist is content to have the opportunity to engage in his beloved craft, which he considers the meaning of his life.
His journey had its ups and downs, victories in competitions, and recognition from admirers, yet he never ceased his determined quest for his artistic path. In ancient times, "serdyuk" referred to professional infantrymen in the Cossack ranks. This heritage likely passed down not only the surname but also many Cossack traits to the artist, including hard work, modesty, and human dignity.
Boris Serdyuk creates in genres such as portrait, landscape, and thematic composition. His works are varied, reflecting the artist's impressions of the places he visited. Among them are picturesque corners of Kremenchuk and Dnipro views, urban and maritime landscapes, the grandeur of the Carpathian Mountains, and cozy Ukrainian villages. His canvases are intriguing in terms of color and relatively compositionally perfect, revealing the life of nature at the time of their execution.
There are also commissioned portraits and paintings, such as "Shevchenko in Baturyn." He spent over a year working on it, studying the architecture of the former hetman capital. However, the artist prefers to work swiftly, capturing the vision of a painting before it fades from his mind and before the sun changes its angle and shadows. On average, according to the artist, he spends about 40 minutes on a single landscape.
Boris successfully combines a poetic perception of the world and a deep understanding of nature with brilliant artistic execution. His paintings exude a special light and a delicate sense of nature – vivid colors on the canvas resonate with intermediate tones. The artist has abandoned contours, replacing them with separate and contrasting brushstrokes; his paintings amaze with colors, not only their diversity but also the amount of substance applied to the canvas – vibrant, vivid, voluminous.
Describing the master's works is a challenging task. Boris Serdyuk's works are special – they are painted with soul. One must see and feel the wonderful harmony of nature on the artist's canvases firsthand and touch the great mystery of Art.
