"Fights at Sea – Peter the Great – Triptych (Right Side)" by renowned Ukrainian artist Daniil Litvinov captures the intensity and drama of naval warfare during the transformative reign of Peter the Great. Litvinov immerses the viewer in a chaotic yet heroic scene of battle, where sailing ships clash amidst flames, cannon fire, and turbulent waves. The tension is heightened by the contrast between the deep night sky and the bursts of explosive light. The flags flying from the masts—Russian naval banners and Swedish insignias—clearly point to the Great Northern War, where Peter's ambition to establish a strong Russian fleet confronted the powerful Swedish navy. The composition is alive with action: smoke clouds, fluttering ribbons, and cannonballs in flight animate the scene with urgency. In the sky above, a winged figure blows a trumpet, symbolizing the call of destiny or triumph. What the author wanted to express: Litvinov pays tribute to Peter the Great's naval victories, which symbolized a new chapter in Russian history—the country's assertion as a maritime power. This painting conveys struggle, transformation, and national pride, celebrating both the sacrifice of sailors and the strategic genius of Peter. As the right panel of the triptych, it serves as the climax—depicting the culmination of vision and leadership through the fury of battle and the forging of an empire at sea.
