Description
In Tribulus, John Black pays tribute to the United Arab Emirates through the expressive depiction of its national flower — . Known for its resilience and ability to thrive in arid desert climates, this small yellow bloom becomes a powerful symbol of endurance, identity, and the quiet strength of peace.
The flower dominates the canvas with its luminous yellow petals outlined in bold, gestural strokes. The background is a deep, contemplative green, punctuated by spontaneous splashes of red and white, adding a raw, emotional undercurrent. Layered over the painting is a sheet of transparent acrylic, laser-cut with the word "السلام" (, Arabic for "peace"). The script hovers gently over the center of the blossom, as if inscribed directly onto its core — a poetic suggestion that peace is not just an external state, but something that must take root in the heart.
The contrast between the soft organic form of the flower and the precision of the Arabic calligraphy evokes a dialogue between nature and culture, emotion and intellect. Through this union of visual languages, Black offers a nuanced meditation on peace as something deeply rooted, culturally specific, yet universally aspired to.
Tribulus is both homage and invocation — a call to recognize beauty not only in bloom, but in survival and spiritual meaning.
