Description
Oil on canvas (set of 4) with laser-cut transparent acrylic overlay
Series:
In Admiration for such a thing, John Black presents a tender visual hymn to the act of adoration itself — a quiet, contemplative love not for a person, but for beauty, fragility, and form. Composed as a four-part polyptych, each canvas features a single cornflower in bloom, painted in expressive tones of indigo and cobalt against a fresh green background. The flowers stand tall, unguarded and luminous, like subjects of reverence.
Mounted on each panel is a transparent acrylic sheet, engraved with a single letter from the word. These letters are minimalist yet precise, their geometry whispering through the delicacy of the flowers without overpowering them. The interaction between the engraved plastic and painted surface suggests a love that is not shouted but observed — as if love itself were a lens through which we regard the natural world.
The title, Admiration for such a thing, feels like a quiet exhale — a moment of sincere awe. Here, love is not dramatic, tragic, or transformative; it is simply appreciative. Note. Pause. A gesture of gentle devotion to the small, radiant things that make life feel meaningful.
By combining technical clarity with visual softness, Black creates a work that is both conceptually refined and emotionally accessible — a modern meditation on beauty as an act of love.
