Description
“When Time Becomes the Idol" is a visual meditation on humanity's restless obsession with controlling time, often driven by fear, impatience, or the illusion of abandonment. In a world of deadlines, delays, and dreams deferred, we often wrestle to manipulate time like a puzzle, hoping to force outcomes, fix broken moments, or fast-forward through pain.
This painting challenges that instinct. The Rubik's cube-clock hybrid replacing the head represents how our identity is often hijacked by the pressure to 'solve' time to get it right, fast, and in order. Yet the more we try to fix or control it ourselves, the more disoriented we become. The figure above, a mirror of ourselves, is absorbed in the act of forcing order into divine timing, forgetting that true peace comes not from mastering time, but from trusting the One who holds it.
The subtle posture of surrender in the seated figure hints at the quiet truth beneath the chaos: God does not forget. Even in what feels like delay or silence, divine timing is at work unseen, unhurried, and deeply intentional. This piece invites the viewer to move from worry to worship, from panic to patience, and to remember that in the eternal, no one is ever overlooked.

Artistic statement
My practice explores the emotional weight of human experience within societally defined expectations, with particular attention to vulnerability, identity, and psychological tensions in African contexts.
I am interested in how emotions are often repressed, particularly within gendered and cultural structures that demand strength while rejecting gentleness. Through figurative painting, I depict bodies that visibly carry this tension, where inner experiences take on an outward form. The figure often becomes a surface of conflict, where silence, pressure, and memory intersect.
At the heart of my work lies a study of emotional visibility. I am interested in what it means to feel deeply in a world that often demands restraint, and in how painting can become a space where these emotions are acknowledged, welcomed, and made visible.
