Description

Original Painting in Acrylic on Vélin paper.

Signed and dated in the lower right: Rooskens 72.

Anton Rooskens (1906 1976) was a Dutch painter and a key figure in the CoBrA movement, known for his compositions inspired by African and Oceanic art. His work evolved from geometric abstraction to a more spontaneous and organic style after joining CoBrA in 1948. Influenced by primitive art and mythology, his paintings often feature tribal motifs and rhythmic patterns.

The CoBrA movement (1948 - 1951) was a highly influential post-war European avant-garde movement known for its spontaneous, expressive, and experimental approach to art. Formed in Paris by artists from Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam (CoBrA), the group rejected academic traditions in favor of raw, instinctive creativity, often drawing inspiration from folk art, children's drawings, and primitive art.

Prominent members included Asger Jorn (Denmark), Karel Appel (Netherlands), Constant Nieuwenhuys (Netherlands), Pierre Alechinsky (Belgium), Corneille (Netherlands), and Christian Dotremont (Belgium). Other notable contributors were Carl-Henning Pedersen (Denmark), Anton Rooskens (Netherlands), Reinhoud D'Haese (Belgium), Lucebert (Netherlands), and Eugène Brands (Netherlands).

The work is professionally framed in our own frame-shop.

Presentation

Anton Rooskens, born March 16, 1906 in Griendsveen and died February 28, 1976 in Amsterdam, is a contemporary Dutch artist. He was also a teacher at the Don Boscoschool in Amsterdam. In 1948, he tried to get closer to the experimental movement Reflex, then became one of the co-founders of the CoBrA movement with (among others) his compatriots Karel Appel and Corneille. Anton Rooskens' painting draws heavily on primitive art in particular African art as well as the intuitive surrealism of Joan Miró and André Masson. The play of colors and shapes of his canvases has undeniably made an important contribution to the CoBrA movement. Later he incorporated more and more magical signs and symbols in his paintings, especially after 1954 when he made a trip to Central Africa. After this African period, he began an expressionist phase where he reacted to the threats of the Cuban crisis with a more dynamic painting. In the mid-1960s, he returned to more colorful compositions more characteristic of the CoBrA movement.
