Description
This recent work by Benjamin Spark depicts a female figure inspired by the world of Batgirl, posed in front of a New York Times front page. The painter plays with the conventions of comics, American pop culture, and iconic newspapers to create a striking image that straddles the line between heroism, glamour, and contemporary satire.
The artist juxtaposes the realism of the face, the graphic treatment of the costume, and the typographic rigor of the newspaper to produce a strong, energetic, and instantly recognizable composition. The flat areas of vibrant color and the stark contrast between the silhouette and the printed page reinforce the visual impact of the work.
As is often the case with Spark, the painting appropriates symbols from popular culture to project them into a hybrid universe, both playful and critical, where icons are reinterpreted with a resolutely contemporary style.
Presentation
Benjamin SPaRK is a Franco-Belgian artist born in 1969, who lives and works in Brussels. At 28, he studied drawing at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and then went to the United States to improve himself before settling in Belgium, to devote himself entirely to his art.
Painter and sculptor, Benjamin SPaRK creates spooky characters from comics, cartoons, advertising and ancestral symbols of humanity. Benjamin SPaRK appears to be a powerhouse of “street pop" Brussels, a movement which claims the synthesis of American pop culture and the European street art.
