Description
In "Child's Play", Mara presents a familiar figure from her world: a child with a masked face, absorbed in a seemingly innocuous activity. Seated in the corner of a room with neutral tones, he surrounds himself with classic symbols of childhood, a teddy bear, a toy car, a miniature train or even an astronaut figurine, all elements that construct a reassuring, almost universal setting.
But in Mara's world, innocence is never entirely intact. The child builds a tower of colored blocks, a fundamental and formative game, which here becomes a vehicle for language. As they rise, the letters gradually compose an unexpected, trivial, and casual sentence. A popular expression, almost commonplace in everyday language, but one that directly clashes with the naive imagination of the scene.
This contrast is the very strength of the work. Behind the apparent gentleness and pictorial precision, Mara injects a kind of biting irony. The unstable tower, on the verge of toppling, evokes both the fragility of childhood and that of the social and linguistic constructs we internalize from a very young age.
With humor and lucidity, it questions the porous boundary between innocence and vulgarity, between learning and reproduction. A work open to a double interpretation, where play becomes a pretext for a subtle observation of our times.
Presentation
Mara is a collagist artist working in a gallery as well as in an urban environment. As a child, he draws a lot, it is for him the most natural way to express his ideas.
In 2011, he created the character with the cross face which he still uses today to tell his stories. Representing everyone and nobody at the same time, this being is like a puppet that Mara stages in each of her works. Later, he discovered graffiti in Montpellier and began to adapt his character to a new medium: collage. He gradually invests the walls of the city, day and night.
The message being at the center of her work, Mara gives the character the role of megaphone. This one delivers with humor, cynicism and inventiveness the daily life of the artist, but also his vision of the world. With collage on a human scale, he appeals to the viewer's critical mind by tackling certain topical issues such as ecology or technology, but also more personal subjects such as human nature, love.
