I created A Shared Shelter to show that even when life feels rainy or difficult, we can find comfort by walking together. The painting shows several people walking with umbrellas, but the focus is on a couple in the center holding each other closely. I used a very thick painting style with a palette knife to make the rain and the reflections on the ground feel alive and full of texture. The warm, golden colors represent the safety and "solace" we find in a partner. By showing the figures from behind, I wanted to focus on their shared journey and the way they protect each other from the storm. This work is a tribute to human connection and the "refuge" we build for ourselves through love and support.

Godfrey Afebuame is a Nigerian-born, Niagara-based artist with over three decades of professional practice and a distinguished academic background from Auchi Polytechnic. A master colourist and recipient of the Fasuyi Prize for Best Student in Painting, he is renowned for bold, impressionistic compositions that emphasize physical depth and energy. His signature style is defined by heavy impasto applications, where he utilizes a palette knife to build rich, sculptural textures that bring a three-dimensional quality to the canvas. While often centering on the female form, his work addresses broad global narratives, including peace, economics, and environmental sustainability.
A member of the Society of Nigerian Artists, Afebuame's work has been showcased at premier international venues such as the Maison de France and Signature Gallery. His paintings are held in distinguished private and corporate collections across Nigeria and internationally, reflecting a career marked by both critical acclaim and technical evolution. Recently, he has expanded his repertoire to include the delicate, luminous qualities of watercolor, continuing to evolve his practice as a significant contributor to the Canadian contemporary art landscape.
