Camouflage, 2026

Roxana Khonkulova

This work is a manifesto about finding oneself within the confines of strict boundaries and external expectations. It is based on a period of life when the environment dictated the rules, and the individual inevitably adapted to them. When a person becomes part of a rigid system, the line between their true self and external demands begins to blur.
"Camouflage" tells the story of mimicry for the sake of survival. It is about how easily one can dissolve into their surroundings, taking on its form to appear "correct" and understandable to others. Socially approved attributes create a facade, behind which a person's true face becomes mere background - part of the general scenery.
Yet, behind this merging with the environment lies a crucial question: what price does one pay for such comfort? This painting serves as a reminder of how vital it is to have the courage to stop and reclaim your own perspective. It is about the right to be distinct and the strength required to stop being a convenient element of the system and finally dare to be yourself.
