Samu, 2022

Ricardo Tena

“Samu" is a surreal portrait set against a muted purple background, masterfully blending realism and abstraction. The subject's face is fragmented and reassembled with geometric precision, featuring layered, angular shapes that create a faceted, mask-like appearance. The hair is a deep chestnut brown, meticulously crafted to add depth and contrast to the composition. A notable circular form is positioned on the forehead, adding a focal point that disrupts the symmetry. The attire appears sculpted, with overlapping textures giving a sense of armor or avant-garde fashion. The color palette is dominated by earthy tones, complemented by subtle highlights that add volume and intrigue. This piece challenges traditional portraiture, inviting contemplation of identity and form through its innovative and thought-provoking design.

Ricardo Tena returns to the canvas after a 30-year hiatus during which he mastered design and sculpture to. His come-back has been marked by an unstoppable creative flow, producing works that reflect a deeply personal and introspective exploration of contemporary social imagery. Tena's debut collection is a powerful visual narrative, questioning the ways we present ourselves in an era dominated by curated personas and societal expectations. With each piece, Tena invites viewers to challenge their own perceptions, engaging them in a dialogue that blurs the boundaries between the self and the image.
