Description
The artist plays with fire, to create the forms in the polyurethane. The shape appears as it goes, fragile and random. This is the artist Perse this fly and plays between the hollows and the fulls.
A silhouette stands out against a deep blue background. The chromatic contrast immediately catches the eye. The face and hair intertwine in a play of dense textures.
The artist uses a pointillist and organic pattern to sculpt the volumes. These intertwinings of black and red create an almost tactile relief. The skin seems to vibrate under the effect of this graphic repetition.
The gaze, simple and direct, anchors the composition. A voluntary simplicity guides the reading of the image. The red top brings a touch of light and modernity.
The composition plays on the balance between the emptiness of the background and the saturation of the subject. Each dot contributes to the construction of an affirmed presence. The precision of the line emphasizes a rigorous technical mastery.
The whole rests on a harmony of primary colors. The canvas ends with a discreet signature in the lower right corner.
Presentation
In 2002, Joël Mbaïd settled in France, his adopted country, while continuing to explore the warm colors of Africa in his art. He exhibits regularly in galleries and art events both nationally in France and internationally, notably in Neu Isenburg, Germany, and Nuevo Bastán, Spain. However, the COVID-19 pandemic marked a major turning point in his career, forcing him to withdraw from exhibitions and develop new artistic approaches. He rediscovered polystyrene and became familiar with it. The artist explored new textures, cooler and darker colors, much stronger contrasts, and a denser graphic palette, thus giving a new dimension to his work.
His work continues to evolve, his studio thus becoming an intimate, dynamic space where his pictorial and sculptural imagination is born and takes shape in the small town of Veauche in the Loire department in France.
Although he has never set foot in a fine arts school, Joël Mbaïd defines himself not as a self-taught artist, but as an accomplished painter-sculptor and art researcher.
