Description
An exceptional original mixed media artwork by the internationally acclaimed Zhou Brothers.
Mixed media on linen mounted on a wooden stretcher,
Signed and dated in black at the lower left.
Signed, dated and inscribed verso in black marker : ©ZHOU BROTHERS 1992 BZ 058
Size: approximately 122 x 122 cm.
Characteristic of the Zhou Brothers' artistic practice, the painting merges abstraction with symbolism, inviting multiple interpretations. The central figure appears both ancient and timeless, evoking themes of memory, spirituality and human existence. Influenced by Chinese cultural traditions as well as Western abstract painting, the artists create a visual language in which gesture, texture and symbolism are brought into perfect balance.
The Zhou Brothers, ShanZuo Zhou (born 1952) and DaHuang Zhou (born 1957), are among the most important Chinese-American contemporary artists. Since beginning their artistic collaboration in 1973, they have developed a highly distinctive visual language that combines Eastern philosophy with Western Expressionism and Abstract Painting. Their works are characterised by powerful imagery, rich colour, and an exceptional fusion of spirituality, movement and emotion.
After relocating to the United States, the Zhou Brothers settled in Chicago, where they gained international recognition. Their works have been exhibited in museums, art institutions and leading galleries worldwide and are represented in numerous important public and private collections, including the art collection of former U.S. President Barack Obama.
The artists also attracted international attention through their monumental live painting performances, including presentations at the World Economic Forum in Davos and at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
