Description
This animal portrait captures the essence of an emblematic figure of Israeli creation. The artist draws here from his memories of shepherding to bring this animal to life. The gaze is central. It fixes the viewer with a calm intensity.
The composition relies on a sharp contrast. The pure white of the face stands out against a dark, almost nocturnal background. Touches of deep green highlight the contours and the gaze, bringing an organic nuance to the whole.
The acrylic technique favors broad and assured strokes. The movement of the brush remains visible. This approach brings a raw and direct dimension to the representation.
The animal becomes here a symbol of innocence and memory. The simplicity of the forms reinforces the physical presence of the subject. This painting from 1990 perfectly illustrates the mastery of the line and the painter's sensitivity towards the animal world. The face occupies the majority of the space, creating immediate proximity.
Presentation
Menashe Kadishman (1932–2015) was an influential Israeli painter and sculptor known for his unique artistic vision that blended minimalist influences with deeply symbolic themes. Born in Tel Aviv, he studied sculpture under Moshe Sternschuss and Rudi Lehmann before moving to London in 1959. There, he immersed himself in the minimalist art movement and formed connections with artists such as Anthony Caro. His first major exhibition took place at the Grosvenor Gallery, marking the beginning of an international career.
Kadishman’s early experiences as a shepherd in a kibbutz during the 1950s had a profound impact on his art. This connection to nature and animals became a defining element of his work, culminating in his 1978 Venice Biennale installation, where he famously presented a flock of painted sheep. This theme remained central throughout his career, with his expressive depictions of sheep becoming his signature motif. In the 1990s, Kadishman also created powerful works for the Jewish Museum in Berlin, addressing themes of memory, loss, and the victims of war and violence, particularly in reference to the Holocaust. His contributions to Israeli art were recognized in 1995 when he received the prestigious Israel Prize.
Kadishman’s legacy continues to thrive in the global art scene. His works remain highly sought after by collectors, and his sculptures and paintings are frequently displayed in major museums and exhibitions worldwide. Recent retrospectives have revisited his impact on contemporary sculpture and painting, shedding new light on his innovative use of color and form. His sheep paintings, in particular, continue to resonate with audiences, symbolizing themes of sacrifice, innocence, and collective memory. His public sculptures, many of which stand in Israel and beyond, remain lasting testaments to his artistic and cultural influence.
