Description
The work adopts the most dizzying point of view: that of a gaze raised toward a dome. The spectator immediately finds themselves in the position of a faithful in a nave, head tilted back, drawn into a spiral of clouds converging toward a pool of white light at the exact center of the composition.
Around this vortex, a whole winged people. Angels, cherubs, and draped figures float in a circle, bodies elongated, arms outstretched, golden hair, blue-grey and ocher fabrics swirling in the upward current. Some, in the foreground, have an almost sculptural presence; others, reduced to tiny silhouettes, are already lost in the central glow. The architectural frame—golden moldings, stucco, Baroque cornices—surrounds the scene and completes the illusion: we are indeed under a painted ceiling, in a church that has never been visited.
The chromatic range does much of the work. Milky turquoise, creamy whites, warm golds: a late-day light, soft and diffused, without the dark drama of historical Baroque. Miss Evoke does not seek the overwhelming sublime of the Counter-Reformation but something more soothing—an ascension without judgment, an elevation offered rather than imposed.
The title brings the contemporary and slightly mischievous note. The elevator, the most banal object of urban daily life, names what the 17th-century fresco painters called the Assumption or Glory. A modern word for a secular iconography: it is exactly the artist's ground, who makes the great pictorial tradition dialogue with the tools, the language, and the sensibility of his generation.
