Description
A visceral energy defines this oil painting. The composition pulses with a sense of urgent decay. Thick impasto strokes create a turbulent landscape where structure yields to chaos. A fragmented building leans precariously under a heavy, swirling sky. Deep indigos and slate greys dominate the upper register. These moody tones contrast with sharp flashes of terracotta and ochre.
The artist utilizes a powerful metaphorical language. He transforms a physical scene into a psychological state. Forms blur into abstraction. The boundary between earth and atmosphere dissolves through aggressive brushwork. Every mark conveys a feeling of instability and weight. This artwork captures a moment of profound transition. It balances figurative remnants with an almost violent abstraction. The perspective remains intentionally distorted. This technique pulls the viewer into a vortex of atmospheric pressure. Light struggles to pierce through the dense layers of pigment. The result is a haunting vision of erosion. The scene ends in a gritty foreground of muted browns and sharp, skeletal lines.
Presentation
Gia Khutsishvili was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, on July 18, 1966, into a family of artists. He graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of Fine Arts in 1989. Since 1990, Khutsishvili has been engaged in academic and pedagogical activities at the Tbilisi State Academy of Fine Arts, where he has taught and contributed to the institution's educational programs. He has also taught painting and delivered lectures at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. Over the course of more than three decades, Khutsishvili has developed a sustained artistic practice alongside his academic, research, and cultural activities. He has participated in and contributed to numerous exhibition projects and cultural events and has been involved in the preparation of publications, books, and art albums. His professional activities also include research and translation. Khutsishvili occupies a distinctive position within the generation of Georgian artists that emerged in the 1990s. His practice is characterized by a sustained engagement with abstraction, symbolism, and metaphor, with mythological themes and imagery constituting an important component of his artistic vocabulary. Through these elements, his work explores questions of perception, interpretation, and the relationship between figurative references and abstract forms. Metaphor plays a fundamental role in Khutsishvili's artistic approach, functioning as a structural principle through which images, symbols, and meanings are brought into dialogue. His works reflect a consistent interest in developing an individual visual language grounded in abstraction while remaining connected to cultural, historical, and mythological references. Khutsishvili's works are held in museum collections and private collections in Georgia and internationally.
