Description
Oil & collage on wooden board
This oil painting reveals a mastery of texture and abstraction. Thick impasto strokes define the composition. The palette remains muted. Silvery greys blend with earthy ochres and deep moss greens. A strong diagonal line cuts across the surface. This structural element creates a sense of tension and direction.
The artist employs a palette knife to build physical layers. This technique adds a tactile dimension to the canvas. Light catches the ridges of the paint. It creates a shimmering effect reminiscent of water in motion. The composition balances fragmented shapes with organic flow. It avoids literal representation to evoke a feeling of immersion.
The approach reflects a deep engagement with symbolism. Figuration dissolves into a rhythmic arrangement of planes. This creates a sophisticated dialogue between form and void. The resulting atmosphere is contemplative and serene. Every gesture remains precise. The artwork captures a fleeting moment of reflection through a complex layering of pigment and light. It transforms a simple seascape into a profound study of material and perception.
Presentation
Gia Khutsishvili was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, on July 18, 1966, into a family of artists. He graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of Fine Arts in 1989. Since 1990, Khutsishvili has been engaged in academic and pedagogical activities at the Tbilisi State Academy of Fine Arts, where he has taught and contributed to the institution's educational programs. He has also taught painting and delivered lectures at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. Over the course of more than three decades, Khutsishvili has developed a sustained artistic practice alongside his academic, research, and cultural activities. He has participated in and contributed to numerous exhibition projects and cultural events and has been involved in the preparation of publications, books, and art albums. His professional activities also include research and translation. Khutsishvili occupies a distinctive position within the generation of Georgian artists that emerged in the 1990s. His practice is characterized by a sustained engagement with abstraction, symbolism, and metaphor, with mythological themes and imagery constituting an important component of his artistic vocabulary. Through these elements, his work explores questions of perception, interpretation, and the relationship between figurative references and abstract forms. Metaphor plays a fundamental role in Khutsishvili's artistic approach, functioning as a structural principle through which images, symbols, and meanings are brought into dialogue. His works reflect a consistent interest in developing an individual visual language grounded in abstraction while remaining connected to cultural, historical, and mythological references. Khutsishvili's works are held in museum collections and private collections in Georgia and internationally.
