Description
This oil painting presents a haunting, introspective portrait. The figure emerges from a tempest of dark, swirling brushstrokes. Thick impasto defines the curls of hair, creating a rhythmic sense of movement and tension. The closed eyes suggest a state of deep contemplation or internal suffering. Heavy outlines contour the face, blending figurative representation with a powerful abstract sensibility.
The palette remains muted, dominated by grey and charcoal tones. A sharp contrast appears in the vivid red of the lips, drawing the viewer toward the center of the composition. This singular pop of color punctuates the somber mood.
The Georgian artist employs a metaphoric approach to explore human perception. He navigates the boundary between the physical form and symbolic abstraction. The distorted proportions evoke a sense of psychological weight. Every stroke feels intentional, contributing to an atmosphere of quiet intensity. This artwork reflects a sophisticated mastery of texture and emotional expression. Light catches the crests of the oil paint, adding a sculptural quality to the pale skin of the subject.
Presentation
Gia Khutsishvili was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, on July 18, 1966, into a family of artists. He graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of Fine Arts in 1989. Since 1990, Khutsishvili has been engaged in academic and pedagogical activities at the Tbilisi State Academy of Fine Arts, where he has taught and contributed to the institution's educational programs. He has also taught painting and delivered lectures at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. Over the course of more than three decades, Khutsishvili has developed a sustained artistic practice alongside his academic, research, and cultural activities. He has participated in and contributed to numerous exhibition projects and cultural events and has been involved in the preparation of publications, books, and art albums. His professional activities also include research and translation. Khutsishvili occupies a distinctive position within the generation of Georgian artists that emerged in the 1990s. His practice is characterized by a sustained engagement with abstraction, symbolism, and metaphor, with mythological themes and imagery constituting an important component of his artistic vocabulary. Through these elements, his work explores questions of perception, interpretation, and the relationship between figurative references and abstract forms. Metaphor plays a fundamental role in Khutsishvili's artistic approach, functioning as a structural principle through which images, symbols, and meanings are brought into dialogue. His works reflect a consistent interest in developing an individual visual language grounded in abstraction while remaining connected to cultural, historical, and mythological references. Khutsishvili's works are held in museum collections and private collections in Georgia and internationally.
